Shims work by sliding between the ratchet and teeth of a handcuff rather than through the keyhole to quickly release the locking mechanism. Note: these shims will work only when handcuffs are single-locked.

Each pair of collar stay shims contains two different types of shims. The standard shim design works on Smith & Wesson, Chicago, Peerless, Safariland and countless other types of handcuffs.

The split pawl handcuff shim is capable of all of the same standard single-locked cuffs as well as higher-security anti-shim designs like the Hiatt-Thompson model handcuffs.
